Can Squirrel's Really Fly?
Posted on December 2, 2008

There is a squirrel that lives in southern Asia that can actually fly. The flying squirrel has folds of skin between its front and back legs which enable it to glide long distances. The giant flying squirrel has a distinctive, thick-haired flying membranes that stretches from its wrists to its hind legs and is further enlarged by a fold of skin between the base of the tail and the hind legs. This membranes is composed of sheets of muscles that can be tensed or relaxed, enabling the animal to control the direction of the glide. There is also a large spur on the edge of this membranes that helps to support it. Flying squirrels are nocturnal - which means they sleep during the day and become active at night.
